When he ran to become the presidential candidate for the Republican Party in 2008, Ron Paul generated huge enthusiasm among a certain section of the Right, especially paleo-conservatives and isolationists. As a libertarian with anti-war views he also picks up votes from the anti-war Left, and tends to be vilified by neoconservatives. But if military donations is anything to go by — and I think we can safely say that it is — then Paul has his finger on the pulse of the military rank and file.
The outspoken maverick has received 71% of contributions by active duty military personnel to Republican Party hopefuls. The next highest was Herman Cain, with military donations at 13%. Moreover, military donations to Paul beat all other presidential candidate hopefuls combines, even when the current President is included. Paul received 51% of all military donations to all of those hoping to run for president. President Obama was the next highest, with 29%.
Why is it we hear so little of Paul when the US is fighting two wars?
